Bringing New Life to Dead Vines

How an armful of yard clean-up became a new creation

As I wondered how to dispose of dead vines I’d gathered in autumn from the trees in our backyard, I wrapped an extra long one around my arm to carry it to the fire pit. I had a thick circle of dried vine by the time I got there.

I thought it looked like the base for a lovely Christmas wreath!

The dead and withered vine, choking our trees and therefore destined for the fire, suddenly had a new life and a more beautiful purpose. I made three wreaths that year. One for myself and one each for my two daughters.

They looked delightful, wrapped in tartan ribbon and tied in a bow with leaves from our evergreen trees.

In 2 Corinthians, God tells us that He reconciled Himself to the world through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. God no longer counts our sins against us.

If we are in Christ, we are a new creation. The old person is dead to sin, and the new person is alive in Christ. We, too, have a new life and a more beautiful purpose.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Do you feel like a new creation? If not, ask God to reveal Himself as you walk with Him today. What old things do you see that are made new? Perhaps a lovely garden container from found evergreen branches and pine cones. Or a treasured old piece of furniture painted and made into garden art?

If we can transform old things which seem of little worth, how much more can our loving God transform us?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, transform me into the image of my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Your Son. Show me that I am a new person because of Him.

Continued reading: 2 Corinthians 5: 11-21.

’Til next time —thank you for reading, and  remember you are loved by the One who created you in His image. Merry Christmas, everyone! 💜🎂🩷

How We Know God Cares for Us

Photo by Kendall Hoopes on Pexels.com

What is humankind to the Creator?

“When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?”

(Psalm 8:3–4, NIV)

The Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt when Moses said God heard their cries. Toiling in the hot desert, they were skeptical. But God did as He said.

In the Servant Songs, Isaiah chapters 42–43, God again hears the people and gives them hope that He will send a Deliverer.

What do we mean to God?

We mean more to Him than we can possibly imagine!

God sent His son to show us, and He pursues us still.

Johnny Cash sings a beautiful song about this.

Happy Valentines/Whatever Day

I wish all of you a very happy day today, be it Valentines Day, Love Day or Tuesday. I don’t for one moment profess to be an expert at any of the above (well, Tuesday I could handle, I guess), so I’m going to hand you over to the experts:

What Is Love?

For the Christ followers out there, here’re a few scripture verses from 1 Corinthians:  (not only for weddings!)

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a New International Version (NIV)

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails.

Just a recap; this was written by Paul to the church at Corinth and is for all believers to remind them that Christ taught us to love one another. It’s a beautiful passage but it refers to the love of all people, not just romantic love. However, I still think it goes well with a couple starting a life together, don’t you?

For The Lovers

I’ve met this amazing speaker in person and had the privilege of taking a few of her classes at a writer’s conference. She’s a straight-talking Christian woman who doesn’t mince words. So if you’re looking for that little something extra today, well here’s Sheila’s award-winning book.

And, if you’re single and you’re wondering where that leaves you, here’s an honest post by a single guy on how he feels about being single in a church full of mostly couples.

Redefining What I Do || Lord, What Do You Want Of Me?

Lord, what do you want of me?

In Part One of my self-discovery posts I told you about questioning my identity as a Christian and what God wanted me to do with my life after my children had grown.

In the books I read and the classes I took at church, I came to realize I’m God’s unique design; a one-of-a-kind human being created in His image for a specific purpose at this moment in time. It’s no accident I’m here right now, writing these words, and knowing that makes a world of difference to how I live my life. God made me with a specific intent – and you too! If you’ll bear with me for a while I’ll bring it full-circle.

My Passion

To help people who are searching for identity and purpose, who may have lost direction or feel disheartened and hopeless.

My Natural Abilities

Here are my 5 strongest abilities:

  • Encouraging

I’d like to list them all but I don’t want to brag 😉

  • Perceiver

My Personal Experience

  • Christian Writer
  • Lay Pastoral Counsellor
  • Workshop Leader
  • Kingdom Purpose Coach
  • Mentor
  • Helper in church ministries, community events and in public schools

I’ve listed only a few things here, but there’s a reason for that (it has to do with age…)

How I Discovered God Had Been With Me All Along

As part of my Kingdom Purpose Coaching, I help my clients bring all their attributes together to discover how individual they are and what they can do for God’s Kingdom by His unique design for them. I do this by asking them to take note of the repetitions in each category. Here’s what I learned about my own Kingdom Purpose:

‘To help others see the hope in Christ; encourage them to discover their purpose for God’s Kingdom on Earth, and equip them for their assignment’.

Do you see the repetitions?

So with that in mind, how did I apply it to my life moving forward? I’ll blog about that in Part 3 – Redefining My Life.

Till next time, know you are loved by the One who created you in His image.

What On Earth Are You Doing Here?

Kingdom Purpose – What On Earth Are You Doing Here?

We’re not content to merely exist – we want to matter in this world. So how do we figure out what our own life means? If we’re not a famous evangelist or humanitarian, what’s our purpose for being here?

“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.” – (Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, 1:11-12 MSG).

We are all unique individuals, with our own unique qualities and our own unique assignment from God.  He gave us all the attributes we’d need to do His work here and feel His pleasure in our completed assignment. Take a look at a picture of space.

The God who created the earth and all those amazing nebulas and supernova, dark matter and pulsars, created you and me unique and in His image to be family in His name!

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago”. – (Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, 2:10 NIV).

Whatever God has laid on your heart He has given you the ability to do. What has your heavenly Father asked you to undertake on His behalf in this kingdom on earth?
